Verbo + -ing o to... (try / need / help)

Algunos verbos ingleses van seguidos de un gerundio (-ing) o de un infinitivo (to + verbo base). Para try, need y help, la forma elegida puede cambiar el significado o responder a una regla gramatical. Esta lección explica las diferencias y ofrece reglas para contextos profesionales.

  • Try: 'try + to' = hacer un intento; 'try + -ing' = experimentar con una solución.
  • Need: 'need + to' = obligación; 'need + -ing' (o 'need + participio pasado') = algo requiere una acción.
  • Help: puede ir seguido del infinitivo sin 'to' o con 'to'; rara vez seguido de -ing.

Decide si te refieres a 'intento', 'experimento', 'necesidad' o 'asistencia':

  • 'Try + to' = intento o esfuerzo (I tried to connect).
  • 'Try + -ing' = probar una solución (I tried restarting).
  • 'Need + to' = alguien debe hacerlo; 'Need + -ing' = algo requiere una acción (The file needs updating).
  • 'Help' = usa el infinitivo (con o sin 'to'): 'help (to) finish'. Evita 'help + -ing' como complemento directo.

Los estudiantes suelen confundir formas y significados. Cuidado con estos errores universales:

  • Usar -ing o to indistintamente cuando el significado cambia (p. ej., 'tried to' vs 'tried -ing').
  • Usar 'help' + -ing como objeto directo (incorrecto: 'helped preparing').
  • Confundir 'need + -ing' (algo requiere acción) con 'need + to' (alguien debe hacerlo).
  • Olvidar que algunos verbos permiten ambas formas pero con sentidos diferentes.
