I want you to... / I told you to... — Introducción

Estas estructuras usan un objeto (you, him, her, them) + el infinitivo con to para expresar deseos, peticiones, instrucciones u órdenes reportadas. «I want you to...» expresa una petición o deseo (presente/futuro). «I told you to...» informa de una instrucción, orden o consejo dado en el pasado.

  • «I want you to + verbo base» = petición, deseo o instrucción ahora o en el futuro.
  • «I told you to + verbo base» = informa de una orden o instrucción pasada.
  • Usa el infinitivo con to después de un objeto: want + someone + to do something ; tell + someone + to do something.

Regla clave: objeto + infinitivo con to

Tras verbos como want y tell (cuando tienen objeto directo), usa el objeto seguido del infinitivo con to.

  • Correcto: I want you to prepare the agenda.
  • Correcto: She told him to wait in the lobby.
  • Incorrecto: I want you preparing the agenda. (forma verbal incorrecta)
  • Incorrecto: He told to wait. (falta el objeto)

Coloca 'not' antes del infinitivo para las negaciones: 'told her not to...' ; evita omitir el objeto.

Errores comunes a evitar

Los estudiantes suelen cometer errores previsibles con estos patrones. Atención a lo siguiente:

  • Usar un gerundio en lugar del infinitivo con to: 'I want you doing' → incorrecto.
  • Omitir el objeto: 'I told to finish' → falta la persona que debe actuar.
  • Orden incorrecto en las negaciones: es preferible 'not to' antes del verbo ('told her not to...').
  • Usar el infinitivo sin to después de want/tell con objeto: 'I want you call' → incorrecto.
  • Confundir tiempos: 'I told you to call' informa de una instrucción pasada; elige bien el tiempo verbal.

Comprueba que tienes un objeto (someone) + to + verbo base; coloca 'not' antes del infinitivo en las negaciones.
