Antes, después, durante, mientras

Estas palabras conectan eventos en el tiempo. Úsalas para indicar cuándo ocurre una acción en relación con otra.

  • Before (antes) y after (después) indican el orden de los eventos.
  • During (durante) muestra que algo ocurre en medio de un periodo o evento.
  • While (mientras) introduce una oración subordinada y muestra dos acciones que ocurren al mismo tiempo.

Tip

Regla clave: oración vs sustantivo

Recuerda cómo cada conector se combina con sustantivos u oraciones:

  • Usa during + sustantivo: during the meeting, during the call, during lunch.
  • Usa while + oración: while I worked, while she was presenting.
  • Before y after pueden usar sustantivos, formas en -ing o oraciones completas: before the meeting / before meeting / before I arrived.

Cuando una oración temporal inicia la frase, coloca una coma después.

Errores comunes a evitar

Ten cuidado con los errores frecuentes que cometen los aprendices con estos conectores:

  • Usar during + oración en lugar de during + sustantivo (mal: During I spoke... → correcto: While I spoke... o During the speech...).
  • Usar while + sintagma nominal (mal: While the meeting → correcto: During the meeting o While the meeting was happening).
  • Olvidar la coma cuando la oración temporal va al inicio: While I was late I missed the call → añade una coma después de la oración.
  • Secuencia de tiempos incorrecta cuando importa el orden de eventos pasados (usa past perfect si es necesario).
  • Confundir la forma -ing y el infinitivo después de conectores (prefiere sustantivo o -ing después de during; oración después de while).

Enfócate en lo que sigue a cada conector (sustantivo vs oración) y en el orden de los tiempos en eventos pasados.
