Esta lección continúa el estudio de los phrasal verbs que usan la partícula « up ». Estos verbos combinan un verbo + up y a menudo cambian el significado básico del verbo. Esta parte se centra en phrasal verbs relacionados con velocidad, progreso, finalización y aparición.

  • « Up » puede indicar finalización (wrap up), aumento de velocidad o intensidad (speed up), o alcanzar un nivel (catch up).
  • Algunos phrasal verbs describen apariciones inesperadas (show up, turn up) o resultados finales (end up).

Regla clave: separables vs inseparables

La mayoría de los phrasal verbs con « up » de esta lección son separables, pero algunos se comportan de forma diferente según el contexto.

  • Separables (speed up, back up, wrap up): puedes decir "speed up the process" o "speed the process up". Con pronombres: "speed it up".
  • Usos intransitivos (show up, end up, turn up): a menudo sin objeto directo — "He showed up late."
  • Con preposición (catch up with, keep up with): la preposición sigue a la partícula — "catch up with the team".

Cuando un phrasal verb lleva preposición (catch up WITH), mantén toda la expresión junta.

Errores comunes con phrasal verbs con "up"

  • Colocar pronombres después de la partícula (mal: "back up it") en lugar de entre el verbo y la partícula (bien: "back it up").
  • Confundir phrasal verbs similares: "catch up" (ponerse al día) vs "catch on" (entender).
  • Olvidar preposiciones requeridas: "catch up WITH someone" no solo "catch up someone".
  • Usar un phrasal verb transitivo de forma intransitiva o viceversa: "show up" rara vez lleva objeto directo.
