Should, ought to y had better

Estas tres estructuras se usan para dar consejos, hacer recomendaciones o advertir a alguien. Diferen por su fuerza y formalidad:

  • Should: común para consejos generales y expectativas.
  • Ought to: similar a should, algo más formal y usado para deber moral.
  • Had better: más fuerte; sugiere una advertencia o consecuencia negativa si no se actúa.

Regla clave: intensidad y forma

Elige la estructura según la fuerza de tu consejo:

  • Usa 'should' para sugerencias y expectativas normales: should + base verb.
  • Usa 'ought to' para un tono algo más formal o moral: ought to + base verb.
  • Usa 'had better' para advertir sobre consecuencias negativas probables: had better + base verb (a menudo contraído: you'd better).

Errores comunes

Cuidado con estos errores frecuentes al usar should, ought to y had better:

  • Añadir 'to' después de should (incorrecto: 'should to do').
  • Usar 'had better' en narración en pasado (se refiere a advertencia presente/futura).
  • Confundir significados similares sin considerar la intensidad — usa had better para advertencias, no para sugerencias casuales.
  • Forma verbal incorrecta después del modal (recuerda: modal + base verb; para pasado: modal + have + past participle).
