¿Qué son 'There is' y 'There are'?

'There is' y 'There are' se usan para decir que algo existe o está presente. Se emplean para hablar de la presencia de personas, cosas o situaciones.

  • 'There is' + sustantivo singular o incontable (presente)
  • 'There are' + sustantivo plural (presente)
  • Úsalos en oraciones afirmativas, negativas e interrogativas (p. ej., 'Is there...?', 'Are there...?')

Haz coincidir el verbo con el sustantivo que sigue a 'there':

  • En preguntas: invierte el verbo y 'there': Is there a laptop? / Are there laptops?

Errores comunes a evitar

Los estudiantes suelen cometer errores previsibles con 'there is' / 'there are'.

  • Usar 'there is' con sustantivos plurales: Incorrecto -> There is many emails. Correcto -> There are many emails.
  • Traducir directamente desde el francés/español: 'Il y a' / 'Hay' puede ser singular o plural, pero en inglés hace falta 'is' o 'are'.
  • Forma interrogativa incorrecta: Evita 'There is any coffee?' — usa 'Is there any coffee?'
  • Confusión entre 'some' y 'any': Usa 'any' en la mayoría de preguntas y negaciones (Are there any issues?).
