So y such

Esta lección explica la diferencia entre so y such, dos intensificadores comunes en inglés usados para enfatizar grado o cualidad.

  • So suele ir seguido de un adjetivo o adverbio (so + adjetivo/adverbio) o de much/many/few/little para indicar grado o cantidad.
  • Such se usa antes de sintagmas nominales (such + sustantivo o such + a + adjetivo + sustantivo) para enfatizar la cualidad o el tipo.
  • Ambos pueden usarse con oraciones de resultado: so/such ... that ... para mostrar consecuencia.

Recuerda la colocación básica:

  • Usa so antes de adjetivos y adverbios: so + adjetivo/adverbio (so expensive, so carefully).
  • Usa such antes de sintagmas nominales: such + a/an + adjetivo + sustantivo singular O such + adjetivo + sustantivo plural/ incontable (such a large order; such useful information).
  • Usa so/such + that + resultado para indicar consecuencia (so tired that..., such a mess that...).

Si sigue un sustantivo, elige 'such' (con 'a' si es singular). Si no, 'so' suele ser adecuado.

Los estudiantes suelen confundir la colocación y el artículo con so y such.

  • Incorrecto: « It was so a good idea. » → Correcto: « It was such a good idea. »
  • Incorrecto: « She gave such a advice. » → Correcto: « She gave such good advice. » (advice es incontable, no 'a')
  • Confusión con palabras de cantidad: usa 'so many' con plurales contables y 'so much' con sustantivos incontables.
