Qu'est-ce que Verb (+object) + to... ?

Cette structure est utilisée lorsqu'un verbe est suivi d'un objet (un nom ou un pronom) puis d'un infinitif avec to. Elle exprime que le locuteur veut, demande, dit ou s'attend à ce que quelqu'un fasse une action.

  • Modèle : Sujet + verbe + objet + to + verbe à l'infinitif (I want you to attend).
  • Verbes courants : want, ask, tell, advise, expect, persuade, allow, require.
  • Utilisé pour rapporter des demandes, désirs, ordres, conseils, attentes et permissions.

Où placer l'objet et 'to' ?

L'essentiel est l'ordre correct : verbe → objet → to-infinitif.

  • Ordre correct : Sujet + verbe + objet + to + verbe de base. (We asked the vendor to confirm.)
  • L'objet peut être un nom ou un pronom : I want Mary to lead. / I want her to lead.
  • Les formes négatives et interrogatives conservent le même ordre interne : I didn't want him to come. / Did you ask them to participate?

Rappelez-vous : après des verbes comme want/ask/tell, placez l'objet avant 'to' + verbe.

Erreurs courantes à éviter

Les apprenants confondent souvent des structures proches ou déplacent des éléments. Faites attention à ces erreurs universelles.

  • Utiliser un gérondif au lieu d'un infinitif avec to (incorrect : I want you doing this.).
  • Placer 'to' avant l'objet (incorrect : I want to you to attend.).
  • Oublier l'objet quand le verbe l'exige (incorrect : She asked to leave.).
  • Mélanger des verbes qui demandent des schémas différents (certains verbes exigent des gerunds, d'autres des to-infinitives).

En cas de doute, vérifiez si le verbe nécessite généralement un objet + to-infinitif.
