I want you to... / I told you to... — Introduction

Ces structures utilisent un objet (you, him, her, them) + l'infinitif avec to pour exprimer des désirs, des demandes, des instructions ou des ordres rapportés. « I want you to... » exprime une demande ou un souhait (présent/futur). « I told you to... » rapporte une instruction, un ordre ou un conseil donné dans le passé.

  • « I want you to + verbe à l'infinitif » = demande, souhait ou instruction maintenant ou dans le futur.
  • « I told you to + verbe à l'infinitif » = rapport d'un ordre ou d'une instruction passée.
  • Utilisez l'infinitif avec to après un objet : want + someone + to do something ; tell + someone + to do something.

Après des verbes comme want et tell (lorsqu'ils ont un objet direct), utilisez l'objet suivi de l'infinitif avec to.

  • Correct : I want you to prepare the agenda.
  • Correct : She told him to wait in the lobby.
  • Incorrect : I want you preparing the agenda. (mauvaise forme verbale)
  • Incorrect : He told to wait. (objet manquant)

Placez 'not' avant l'infinitif pour les négations : 'told her not to...' ; évitez d'omettre l'objet.

Erreurs courantes à éviter

Les apprenants font souvent des erreurs prévisibles avec ces constructions. Faites attention à :

  • Utiliser un gérondif au lieu de l'infinitif avec to : 'I want you doing' → incorrect.
  • Omettre l'objet : 'I told to finish' → la personne qui doit agir manque.
  • Mauvais ordre des mots pour la négation : préférez 'not to' avant le verbe ('told her not to...').
  • Utiliser l'infinitif sans to après want/tell avec un objet : 'I want you call' → incorrect.
  • Confusion des temps : 'I told you to call' rapporte une instruction passée ; choisissez le temps avec soin.
