What are Weight and Density?

Weight and density are measures used to describe physical properties of materials and objects. Weight refers to the force due to gravity on an object, commonly reported in kilograms or pounds. Density measures how much mass is contained in a given volume and helps predict whether an object will float or sink and how heavy it feels relative to its size.

  • Weight = force (depends on gravity) — common units: kg, lb.
  • Mass = amount of matter (often measured in kg) — not the same as weight.
  • Density = mass / volume — common units: kg/m³, g/cm³.
  • Density helps compare materials (e.g., aluminum vs steel) and is crucial for shipping, packaging, and materials selection.

Table

Key Terms & Examples

Term Definition Example
weight The force exerted by gravity on an object; measured in kg or lb. The package weight is 18 kg for international shipping.
mass The amount of matter in an object; measured in kilograms (kg). The laboratory reported the sample mass as 2.5 kg.
density Mass per unit volume; mass ÷ volume (e.g., kg/m³ or g/cm³). Steel has a higher density than aluminum.
gross weight Total weight including packaging and container. Record the gross weight on the airway bill.
net weight Weight of the product alone, excluding packaging. The net weight printed on the box is 3.2 kg.
tare Weight of packaging or container alone; used to calculate net weight. Subtract the tare weight to find the net weight of the shipment.
specific gravity Ratio of a substance's density to the density of water. The specific gravity of the oil is 0.85.

Tip

Key rule: Distinguish mass, weight and density

Keep the concepts separate and use correct units:

  • Mass is constant and measured in kilograms (kg).
  • Weight is a force (mass × gravity) and often given in newtons (N) or informally in kg/lb on scales.
  • Density = mass / volume. Use kg/m³ or g/cm³ for solids and liquids.

In many business contexts (shipping), 'weight' on documents means mass measured on a scale; clarify units when needed.

Example

Examples in context

The freight forwarder recorded the gross weight as 520 kg.

We need to calculate the density of the polymer before selecting the mold.

Please tare the container so the scale shows only the net weight of the product.

The engineer noted that the new alloy has a lower density but higher strength than steel.

Tip

Common mistakes to avoid

Learners often make predictable errors when using weight and density vocabulary. Watch for these:

  • Confusing mass and weight — mass is not affected by gravity changes; weight is.
  • Using incorrect units or mixing units (e.g., kg with mL without conversion).
  • Forgetting to include or exclude packaging (gross vs net weight).
  • Using 'weight' as a verb incorrectly (e.g., 'The box weights 10 kg' is wrong).
  • Mistaking density for weight when comparing how heavy objects feel relative to size.

Always check the required unit, clarify if packaging is included, and use correct verb/noun forms.

Quiz

Choose the correct sentence:

Hint: Check noun vs verb forms and what documents usually report for shipments.

Quiz

Complete: The density of a substance is calculated as _____ .

Hint: Think about how mass and volume relate in a formula.

Quiz

Which term refers to the total weight including packaging?

Hint: Think about whether packaging is included or excluded in the measurement.

Key Points

Vocabulary

weight

noun CEFR A2 //weɪt//

The force exerted by gravity on an object; often used to describe how heavy something is.

Please confirm the weight of each pallet before loading.

Vocabulary

mass

noun CEFR B1 //mæs//

The amount of matter in an object; a scalar quantity measured in kilograms.

The scientist measured the mass of the sample with a balance.

Vocabulary

density

noun CEFR B2 //ˈdɛnsɪti//

Mass per unit volume; used to compare materials and predict buoyancy.

Calculate the density to determine if the component will float in water.

Expression

gross weight

noun CEFR B1 //ɡroʊs weɪt//

The total weight of goods including packaging, container, or trailer.

Declare the gross weight on the customs form.

Expression

net weight

noun CEFR A2 //nɛt weɪt//

The weight of the product itself, excluding packaging.

The label shows the net weight per unit.

Vocabulary

tare

noun CEFR B1 //tɛər//

The weight of an empty container or packaging; subtracted to find net weight.

Vocabulary

specific gravity

noun CEFR B2 //spɪˈsɪfɪk ˈɡrævəti//

The ratio of a material's density to the density of water; dimensionless.

The technician recorded the specific gravity to assess fluid purity.
